(Study: Water Below Ice Sheets Can Refreeze To Bottom, Push It Up.)
WASHINGTON -- Scientists are giving a whole new meaning to the phrase "bottoms up."
A new study shows that those massive ice sheets in Antarctica don't just grow on top when it snows, but they also grow from the bottom up.
Ice melts at the bottom of ice sheets, and serves as a lubricant as sheets move across the ground below. Now scientists say that water below can also refreeze to the bottom and push it up.
They found that nearly a quarter of one base is refrozen water.
The research is reported in Friday's issue of the journal Science.
