Singapore Short Film Awards - Happy Place by Jeevan Nathan
'Happy Place' exudes the eclectic charm of a patchwork blanket, those that your grandmothers used to have. It is multi-faceted in its visuals and the different elements are seamlessly pieced together. Mixing pencil-drawing animation with real-life motion, it is really telling a story of a boy who saves his sister from the suffering of an illness. Genre-wise, it leans on fantasy even though it illustrates a very real situation. The drift is that the boy rescues his sister from the 'sad place' to the 'Happy Place' supposedly symbolising recovery. I do have to mention that while it is a conscientious work of craft, it needs more work on vision. The premise is too safe, it needs to be taken a 'risky place'.
